The Quick Facts report provides an overview of the different types and counts of education buildings by state, intermediate school district, and district.

The data are important because it provides a quick overview of the number of educational facilities and buildings in the state of Michigan.

Three types of entities are displayed when viewing a report: schools, Unique Education Providers (UEPs), and non-instructional ancillary facilities.

You can search building and facility information by ISD, district and statewide. After choosing your location, select the desired school year. You can explore the report by the following three categories: number of schools broken down by grade, number of unique education providers broken down by grade, and number of non-instructional ancillary facilities broken down by ancillary function. When you view the first two sections of the report, you’ll see building count information broken down by grade level, intermediate school district (ISD), local education agency (LEA), Public School Academy (also known as charters, or PSAs), state facility, and school year. When you view the third report, you’ll see ancillary facilities broken down by ISD, LEA, PSA, state facility, and school year.

Exploring the Quick Facts report can answer questions like:

What are the types and number of educational related buildings in the state?

Under Edit Report/Find Location, click the Reset to Statewide button. Under Report Settings, choose your desired school year. Then click View Results. When your report appears the number of schools broken down by grade will appear. In the grey view bar at the top of the page, you will have the option to click on Unique Education providers and Non-Instructional Ancillary Facilities. By exploring all three categories, you will have an idea of the types and numbers of educational buildings in the state.

How many elementary schools are in my district?           

Under Edit Report/Find Location, select your district. Under Report Settings, choose the desired school year. Then click View Results. Under Grade Level, you will see the number of elementary schools in your district. Make sure to click on the Unique Education Providers option to check for additional elementary schools.

What are the other types of non-instructional education-related buildings? How many are there statewide?    

Under Edit Report/Find Location, click on the Reset to Statewide button. Under Report Settings, choose your desired school year. Then click View Results. When your report appears, click on Non-Instructional Ancillary Facilities in the grey view bar at the top of the webpage.

The Quick Facts report uses the following examples of grade level groupings. Elementary, junior/middle, and high school grades were identified by using the grades and settings reported by the district as being offered at the school. Typically, elementary grades range from kindergarten to six, junior/middle school grades range up to grades seven and eight, and high school grades range from nine to twelve.

Elementary, middle and high school labels are not universally agreed upon; these are provided as an analytical tool:

• Elementary schools: A kindergarten through fifth grade building, a kindergarten center, a sixth grade building.
• Middle schools: A seventh through eighth grade building, an eighth grade building, a sixth through ninth grade building.
• High schools: A ninth through twelfth grade building, a tenth through twelfth grade building, a ninth grade building, a ninth through twelfth grade building with a kindergarten.
• Middle/high schools: A seventh through twelfth grade building and a sixth through tenth grade building.
• Elementary/middle schools: A kindergarten through eighth grade building, and a fifth through seventh grade building.
• Elementary/high schools: A kindergarten through twelfth grade building and a tenth grade through twelfth grade building that also has first grade.

This report is updated annually in the fall.

Report Labels

Location Name/Type/Entity - You can select and compare data at different entity levels: statewide, by intermediate school district (ISD), by school district, and by individual schools that include all local education agency (LEA) and public school academy (PSA) schools. It is important to note public school academies are also referred to as charter schools and considered their own district.

Intermediate School Districts (ISDs) - Provide various administrative services and cooperative, coordinated educational services among many school districts in the name of economy and efficiency. This includes multiple constituent LEAs and PSAs.

Local Education Agency (LEA) - These are public school districts operating in accordance with the statutes, regulations, and policies of the Michigan Department of Education. An LEA district has a set geographical boundary and may include any grade configuration along with educational settings (e.g., alternative education, special education, career and technical education).

Public School Academy (PSA) - Also referred to as charter schools, a public school academy is a state-supported public school without geographical boundaries. A public school academy may include grades or educational settings in accordance with its charter contract. It is important to note public school academies are also referred to as charter schools and considered their own district.

State Facility - Educational facilities administered by the State of Michigan. These include correctional facilities, Michigan School for the Deaf.

School - An administrative unit (not necessarily a physical building) that provides instruction to students. It is operated by a primarily publicly funded educational entity (MDE, ISD, LEA, PSA, etc.).

Unique Education Provider (UEP) - An entity which is not a school but provides instructional services to children before kindergarten, supplemental instruction, provides support education Pre-K through grade 12, or adult education services.

Non-Instructional Ancillary Facility (NIAF) - An entity that does not provide instruction, but is affiliated with the LEA, ISD, PSA, State, or Other, and does receive an entity code for reporting purposes. Examples: an entity serving as a bus garage, transportation center, plant/maintenance facility, administrative support facility, food service center, communications/media center, sports/recreation facility, health services facility, family/community center, professional training center, agriscience/natural resources center, or treatment center.

Non-School Recipient -Not a school or unique education provider, but receives monies through the Michigan Electronic Grants System (MEGS) or Cash Management System (CMS). Examples are community action agencies, soup kitchens or day care centers. These are currently not associated with LEAs, PSAs, or ISDs.

Blank - Nothing was reported for the entity during the collection period.

Ungraded Entity - An entity that doesn't have a graded environment, such as an ISD or district.

Data Collection

The Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) collected the data used to compile this report. The report is derived from data reported to the State of Michigan by Michigan Intermediate School Districts (ISDs), districts and schools in the Educational Entity Master (EEM), an application administered by the Center for Educational Performance (CEPI).
